Broadband
Broadband is a generic term used to describe Internet access
faster than standard dial-up Internet access at 56Kbps (Kilobits
per second). Broadband can be anything from 128Kbps to 10Mbps
(Megabits per second). Typically, broadband is offered at 512Kb,
1 Mb or 2 Mb. Sometimes the distance you are from your telephone
exchange limits the speed available to you but you can check
this on the BT
web site.
Once you have decided to get broadband your Internet Service
Provider (ISP) will send you a box containing some software,
a broadband modem and some cables.
Installation is quite straightforward (if it works first time!)
and if you patiently and carefully follow the instructions all
should be well. If however you would like the comfort of knowing
everything has been connected and set up properly ClickStart
would be happy to help. Broadband installations normally take
1 hour or less, so it's a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Plain
English
Megabit - A Megabit is 1000 bits of data and is used
to describe the speed at which data flows from your computer
to the Internet. The rate (e.g. 1Mb per second) describes the
download speed. Uploading is at the lower speed of 256Kbps.
This "asymmetry" accounts for the name ADSL or Asymmetric
Digital Subscriber Line.
